Third-party SIEM export paths.
Use this page to decide whether Microsoft security, identity, Microsoft 365, and Azure telemetry can be sent to a third-party SIEM without making Microsoft Sentinel the ingestion destination.
Decision model
Sentinel is one possible consumer, not the definition of the telemetry source. Start with the Microsoft product or Azure resource, identify its native export mechanism, then decide whether the SIEM consumes Event Hubs, Storage, or an API collector.

Global export matrix
| Source | Telemetry | Primary mechanism | Event Hub | Storage | Sentinel required | Requirement | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Defender XDR | Supported Advanced Hunting events, alerts, and evidence | Defender XDR Streaming API | Yes | Yes | No | Security Administrator plus Event Hub or Storage permissions | Do not assume every Advanced Hunting table is streamable. |
| Defender for Endpoint | Endpoint Advanced Hunting events | MDE Raw Data Streaming API / Defender XDR Streaming API | Yes | Yes | No | MDE P1, MDE P2, or Defender for Business applies to the streaming API page | The current Microsoft guidance points MDE users to the broader Defender XDR streaming experience. |

| Defender for Identity | Identity Advanced Hunting events | Defender XDR Streaming API | Yes | Yes | No | MDI licensing required for the underlying telemetry | Verify table source relationships; do not treat every Identity table as exclusively MDI. |
| Defender for Cloud Apps | CloudAppEvents | Defender XDR Streaming API | Yes | Yes | No | Defender for Cloud Apps / Defender XDR entitlement depends on tenant licensing | CloudAppEvents is streamable, but product ownership and source connectors should be documented per deployment. |
| Defender for Cloud | CloudAuditEvents and supported cloud infrastructure hunting tables | Defender XDR Streaming API or Defender for Cloud/Azure-native exports depending on destination | Depends | Depends | No | Defender for Cloud plans and Azure/AWS/GCP connector configuration | Do not confuse Defender for Cloud Apps SaaS telemetry with Defender for Cloud infrastructure/workload telemetry. |
| Microsoft Entra ID | Audit, sign-in, provisioning, risk, Graph activity, and other routed activity logs | Microsoft Entra diagnostic settings | Yes | Yes | No | Security Administrator; Attribute Log Administrator for custom security attribute logs; license varies by log | Some categories require the corresponding feature to be in use before data appears. |
| Microsoft 365 / Purview Audit | Unified audit records for Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Entra, DLP, and other workloads | Office 365 Management Activity API | Via collector | Via collector | No | Unified audit logging and app registration/API permissions | This is a polling/webhook API content-blob model, not Azure Monitor diagnostic settings. |
| Azure Activity Log | Subscription control-plane operations | Azure Monitor diagnostic setting | Yes | Yes | No | Azure RBAC to create subscription diagnostic settings and destination access | Activity log is control plane; Azure resource logs are data plane. |
| Azure resource logs | Resource-specific platform logs and metrics | Azure Monitor diagnostic settings | Yes | Yes | No | Azure RBAC on each resource or policy-driven configuration | Categories vary by resource type; do not copy one resource's categories to another. |
Defender XDR streaming
Defender XDR streaming sends supported Advanced Hunting event types to Azure Event Hubs or Azure Storage. Microsoft publishes a separate support matrix, and that matrix is not the same thing as the full Advanced Hunting schema. Streaming AlertInfo and AlertEvidence gives alert/evidence telemetry, not complete Defender XDR incident management.

Defender product notes
| Product | What to export | Correct path | Do not claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defender for Endpoint | DeviceEvents, DeviceFileEvents, DeviceInfo, DeviceLogonEvents, DeviceNetworkEvents, DeviceProcessEvents, and related endpoint tables. | MDE Raw Data Streaming API or current Defender XDR Streaming API configuration to Event Hubs or Storage. | Do not describe this as Sentinel export or Azure resource diagnostic settings. |
| Defender for Office 365 | EmailEvents, EmailAttachmentInfo, EmailUrlInfo, EmailPostDeliveryEvents, and UrlClickEvents. | Defender XDR Streaming API when those tables are available and selected. | Do not imply MDO has a generic diagnostic setting that streams directly to Event Hubs. |
| Defender for Identity | IdentityLogonEvents, IdentityQueryEvents, and IdentityDirectoryEvents. | Defender XDR Streaming API for supported identity hunting tables. | Do not assume every Identity-prefixed table is exclusively sourced from MDI without checking schema documentation. |
| Defender for Cloud Apps | CloudAppEvents. | Defender XDR Streaming API. | Use for SaaS/CASB activity. Formerly Microsoft Cloud App Security; do not confuse it with Defender for Cloud infrastructure telemetry. |
| Defender for Cloud | CloudAuditEvents and related Cloud* infrastructure hunting tables. | Defender XDR Streaming API for supported advanced hunting tables; Azure-native export paths still apply for Azure resource logs. | Use for Azure/AWS/GCP infrastructure, CSPM, servers, containers, databases, and workload security. |
Microsoft Entra ID
Microsoft Entra diagnostic settings can route supported activity logs to Log Analytics, Event Hubs, Storage, and supported partner destinations. Sentinel is not required. Configuration is under Entra ID, Monitoring and health, Diagnostic settings. General diagnostic settings require Security Administrator; custom security attribute logs require Attribute Log Administrator.
| Log category | Use |
|---|---|
| AuditLogs | Directory audit changes for users, groups, applications, licenses, and related tenant objects. |
| SignInLogs | Interactive user sign-ins. |
| NonInteractiveUserSignInLogs | Non-interactive user sign-ins performed by a client app on behalf of a user. |
| ServicePrincipalSignInLogs | Service principal sign-ins by apps using credentials such as certificates or client secrets. |
| ManagedIdentitySignInLogs | Managed identity sign-ins where Azure manages the credential. |
| ProvisioningLogs | Provisioning service activity for identity lifecycle workflows. |
| ADFSSignInLogs | AD FS sign-in activity. |
| RiskyUsers | Users flagged as risky by Microsoft Entra ID Protection. |
| UserRiskEvents | Risk detections contributing to user risk. |
| NetworkAccessTrafficLogs | Global Secure Access traffic logs when Microsoft Entra Internet Access or Private Access is in use. |
| AgentRiskEvents | Agent identity risk detections. |
| EnrichedOffice365AuditLogs | Enriched Microsoft 365 audit logs for Global Secure Access Microsoft 365 traffic when enabled. |
| MicrosoftGraphActivityLogs | HTTP requests to tenant resources through Microsoft Graph. |
| RemoteNetworkHealthLogs | Remote network health for Global Secure Access deployments. |
| MicrosoftServicePrincipalSignInLogs | Preview first-party Microsoft service principal sign-ins. |
| CustomSecurityAttributeAuditLogs | Custom security attribute changes; configured in the custom security attributes diagnostic settings view. |
Licensing is per telemetry source, not just per export destination. For example, Microsoft Graph activity logs require Entra ID P1 or P2 and must be integrated with storage or analytics tools for retention. Risk-related logs depend on Microsoft Entra ID Protection capabilities.
Microsoft 365 and Purview audit
Microsoft 365 audit export for third-party SIEMs normally uses the Office 365 Management Activity API. The API exposes tenant-specific content blobs and uses Microsoft Entra app registration plus OAuth. A collector starts subscriptions, polls available content or receives webhook notifications, downloads the content blobs, and forwards records to the SIEM.
| Content type | Workloads |
|---|---|
| Audit.AzureActiveDirectory | Microsoft Entra audit and activity records exposed through the Management Activity API. |
| Audit.Exchange | Exchange admin and mailbox audit records. |
| Audit.SharePoint | SharePoint and OneDrive activity records. |
| Audit.General | Other workloads not included in the dedicated Azure Active Directory, Exchange, or SharePoint content types. |
| DLP.All | DLP events for supported workloads. |
Unified audit logging must be enabled before data is available through the API. Audit Standard and Audit Premium licensing affects audit capabilities and retention; this is separate from Event Hubs, Storage, or SIEM collector infrastructure.
Azure Activity Log and resource logs
Azure Activity Log records subscription control-plane operations. Azure resource logs record data-plane or resource-internal operations and are not collected by default. Both commonly use Azure Monitor diagnostic settings for Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics, or partner destinations, but each resource has its own log categories.
| Resource family | What to verify | Destinations |
|---|---|---|
| Azure Firewall | Resource logs through diagnostic settings | Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics |
| Key Vault | Audit and policy/resource logs through diagnostic settings | Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics |
| Application Gateway / WAF | Access, performance, firewall, and resource-specific logs where enabled | Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics |
| AKS | Control plane and cluster logs vary by resource and configuration | Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics |
| Storage accounts | Resource logs and metrics vary by service such as blob, queue, table, and file | Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics |
| Azure SQL | Auditing is enabled from SQL auditing settings; diagnostic settings can route selected platform logs | Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics |
| Front Door, VPN Gateway, API Management, Event Hubs, Service Bus | Resource-specific categories must be verified per resource type | Event Hub, Storage, Log Analytics |
Implementation checklist
- Pick the source product or Azure resource before picking a Sentinel table.
- Confirm the export mechanism in Microsoft Learn: Defender streaming, Entra diagnostic settings, Microsoft 365 Management Activity API, or Azure Monitor diagnostic settings.
- Confirm whether Event Hubs, Storage, or an API collector is the supported destination path.
- Validate the required role and destination permissions before configuring export.
- Map each selected event type to the SIEM parser and document unsupported tables explicitly.
- Keep Sentinel optional unless the architecture intentionally uses Sentinel as an intermediate destination.
Google SecOps translation
Google SecOps parser names do not always line up with Microsoft product or table boundaries. The clearest example is MICROSOFT_DEFENDER_ENDPOINT, which also covers Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Defender for Cloud Apps, TVM, alert/evidence, and identity advanced hunting tables when those payloads use the documented AdvancedHunting category pattern.
